Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
